We know that by 1552 John Shakespeare (father of William) was fined a shilling, for making an unauthorised dunghill — sterquinarium, or midden heap — in front of the house of a neighbour.
In those days of the plague, a fine equivalent to two days' pay for an artisan was a suitably stern judgement on those too idle to use the communal muck-hill .
